Our First
Two Days in Belize
On Friday,
June 6th, we arrived at the Monkey Bay Animal Sanctuary in Belize.
After our arrival, we went on a hike throughout the sanctuary. We ventured
through many different types of land that changed drastically as we
walked. We were introduced to many
unique species of plants and animals. One of the plant species we saw was
called “hot lips” because of its vibrant pink, lip-like structure.
On
Saturday, June 7th, we woke up to a delicious homemade breakfast
made by the wonderful ladies that kindly cook our meals. We then took an hour
and twenty-minute drive to Xuantunich, which are the breath-taking Mayan ruins.
After a short climb up the many steps of the main castillo, we had a
spectacular view of Belize and part of Guatemala. While at the ruins, we heard
many majestic howler monkeys making territorial calls. The howler monkeys have
a large throat pouch, which allows them to make their calls louder. After our delectable meal, we traveled by
foot to a local restaurant, Benny’s Kitchen. There we were given an assortment
of different flavors and types of drinks, from chocolate milkshakes to
Coca-Cola. We then returned back to Monkey Bay for yet another amazing
home-cooked meal.
